TITA YUCHITCHO ELIZALDE JOINS HER GOD

Tita Yutchicto Elizalde passed away at 3:00 AM on 12 January 2009 in Cebu City. She was 62 years old.

She is survived by her children: Tadz, Tikya (known here as Gracey), and Dongay.

I don't know when we became friends. I don't know when I started calling her Auntie Tet. All I know is that, despite the 19 years between us, she was to me a contemporary, a peer, a batchmate.

And she was my fan!

Almost every afternoon, she would sit at Japan's, waiting. And when I alit from the tricyle, she would smile, knowing that she would have her daily dose of laughter from me. Once, she told me that her daughters, Tadz and Tikya, wanted her to stay with them in Cebu, now that she was retired. But she told them that she would just be bored there, and besides, "K_spy is not there."

Though I never asked her what she meant by that, I felt good knowing that through our light moments at Japan's, I had somehow eased her loneliness borne by the untimely deaths of her husband and her son, and her physical distance from her daughters. Other times she told me that she learned a lot from me. I could only mumble my thanks in gratitude.

I'm picky about parties to attend. But I could not remember any party of Auntie Tet that I hadn't attended. Her parties were not to be missed. Not only were they intimate---with few relatives and guests in attendance---they were parties that gave you a sense of home, of family. More than the food, it was always about fun and laughter. And Auntie Tet made sure of that.

All Souls' Day for me and my gang means Auntie Tet waiting at their mausoleum with food and drinks galore. Over budbod, ice candy, peanuts and what not, we'd be laughing just about anything.

I last saw Auntie Tet after the 2008 Search for Mutya ng Tago. I remember because I asked her why she didn't watch the pageant; she said she was tired. On hindsight, she looked pale and there was something in her that was missing.

When I woke up this morning, a text from Japan said that Auntie Tet died of hepato-renal failure at 3:00 AM of 12 January 2009 at the Perpetual Help Hospital in Cebu City. (Cremation is set today.) I sent a message to Tadz, saying I share her family's loss. She texted back, saying: "She did not want to prolong our agony. Amo yadto si Mama."

I couldn't agree more.

Goodbye, Auntie Tet. For now.
