abb,

this is the reason why i can't as yet divulge the location of the sculpture because i'm still gathering data about it. hibawo na sa kaw kanako na gusto ko completo gayud para waray mabilin na mga gumunhap sa iyo mga alimpatakan.

for all we know, this was done by the Father of Modern Sculpture and National Artist himself----Napoleon V. Abueva!

i'll request mayor to restore this and put in an place (i already have one in mind) that best suits the image's artistic message.

K-Spy,

That being the case what a great find!!! Earlier work perhaps? If authenticated, WOW! Bisan kon dili kon kan Napoleon V. Abueva this piece is still 110% worth saving. Sege do your "speech" with the mayor.

Lifted from “About Culture & Arts”
Napoleon V. Abueva
Sculpture (1976)

At 46 then, Napoleon V. Abueva, a native of Cebu, was the youngest National Artist awardee. Considered as the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture, Abueva has helped shape the local sculpture scene to what it is now. Being adept in either academic representational style or modern abstract, he has utilized almost all kinds of materials from hard wood (molave, acacia, langka wood, ipil, kamagong, palm wood and bamboo) to adobe, metal, stainless steel, cement, marble, bronze, iron, alabaster, coral and brass. Among the early innovations Abueva introduced in 1951 was what he referred to as "buoyant sculpture" -- sculpture meant to be appreciated from the surface of a placid pool. In the 80's, Abueva put up a one-man show at the Philippine Center, New York. His works have been installed in different museums here and abroad, such as The Sculpture at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

Some of his major works include Kaganapan (1953), Kiss of Judas (1955), Thirty Pieces of Silver , The Transfiguration (1979)-Eternal Garden Memorial Park, UP Gateway (1967), Nine Muses (1994), UP Faculty Center, Sunburst (1994)-Peninsula Manila Hotel, the bronze figure of Teodoro M. Kalaw in front of National Library, and murals in marble at the National Heroes Shrine, Mt. Samat, Bataan

NOW IT CAN BE TOLD!

For those who have guessed the locus of Madonna and Child, isa ka tadjaw na dalisay na suka an pahalipay ni japan. Please note that you're given until 30 October 2007 to claim your prize.

I've asked many Tagon-ons about who sculpted the image and when, but nobody had given a definite answer. Guess we have to do radiocarbon dating just to ascertain the time this image came to life.

Gracey's mother said that in 1952, when she was in grade school, the image was already standing on a pedestal at the old------

DISPENSARYO! :roll

let me backtrack in time.

DISPENSARYO---where medicines were DISPENSED---was how we called the health center then. During that time, no doctor yet was assigned in Tago. We had the sanitaryo to do medical interventions like giving immunization shots (remember the "sangra?") and dressing wounds.

The most famous sanitaryo was Mamerto "TERIBOL" Castanos. He was called "teribol" because he said "terrible!" as often as 12 times in one minute.

The sanitaryo who followed Teribol were Antimo Cabrera and Penciong Arquiza. It was said that the latter had a great crush on Carmencita Monteclaros, a silent admiration he brought to his grave.

The old dispensary was at the exact same lot where the Hall of Justice now stands. Facing the plaza, it was made of wood and had a 3-rung stair on the wide front door

The old dispensaryo was fenced in with decorative hollow blocks and the entrance was by the roadside; Madonna and Child stood opposite the main gate.

Except Madonna and Child, the things I remembered about the dispensaryo were: the pervading smell of "mekrukrum," the dark brown swing doors of the room on the roadside, the weighing scale and, of course, the menacing look of Antimo Cabrera who was very strict especially during immunization.

The dispensaryo was demolished when the Hall of Justice was built in mid 80s. From then on Madonna and Child had faded from our consciousness.

Madonna and Child's present home is a narrow and dirty cul-de-sac that has become a dumping site.

Madonna and Child now live a lonely life in a place frequented by people at night, but only to empty their bladder!

Here's Madonna and Child in their new home, in between the hard and cold walls of the Hall of Justice and the Town Hall.

WHAT ABOUT YOU? WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THE OLD DISPENSARYO?

I could still remember when I was yet teaching in Purisima School, when the new Health Center was completely constructed, (Infront of Dr. Laiden's house) the "despensaryo" was utilized as the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office......

SUGZ and MADZ: CONGRATULATIONS!!! but am sorry to say that the prize is not transferrable/assignable, so it's forfeited!

because i'm in bohol to renew ties with the tarsiers, i've texted at-at to start talking to JP for the possibel relocation of Madonna and Child to the Rural Health Unit. That way we don't need the Sentrong Sigla seal to put across the message that ours is a baby-and-mother friendly RHU.

and maybe you guys can join us for the unveiling?

YANG,

Ini an laong ni 'ya ester kanako:

1. Dili niya ma ascertain an exact year na in montar an Madonna and Child. Basta mga late '50s kuno yadto, tapos bagan kuno inorder. Di sab siya haw sigurado haw sa cebu adto ordera or sa manila.

Mentong: hano, unoy ato?
Hintungdan: kuan lagi garo, mangayo akon medical certificate.
Mentong: (mo nguso kay minbati nan kasubo) uno say hinungdan nan kamatayon?
Hintungdan: (magduha-duha) In hampak nan mara-ut na hangin!

(Mudungo si 'yo mentong, ga pensar kon unhon pag ininglis kay iniglis sa dapat an death certificate.)

Hintungdan: In hampak sir nan mara-ut na hangin!
Mentong: (in tan-aw an hingtundan) Oo lagi. Ina-a mo lamang kay ato pa bay-bayon inin iniglis ko.

(Taud-taud mungisi si Mentong haw dali-dali na inkuriskurisan an papel.)

(Iduho ni Mentong an medical certificate sa Hintungdan.)

(Dawaton nan Hingtungdan an papel haw basahon.) Amo ini an yakasuwat sa papel:

"cause of death: BLOWN BY TERRIBLE WIND!"

and that was how 'yo mentong came to be known as TERIBOL!
