thank you so much for sending me these wonderful books.
unlike starbucks who's done with over half of the books, i haven't touched them except this one
which i started a few sleeps ago. I find Stephanie Plum deliciously entertaining, throwing me back to my college days when I couldn't survive without my weekly fill of whodunit pulp fiction.
trivial things and this one
kept me busy.
Atonement (given to me by a kindred soul in DTI who was mimi's schoolmate at UP-Cebu) is regarded as Ian McEwan's best work and included by Time magazine in its All-TIME 100 Greatest Novels. Atonement for me however is too introspective and one that could stand further editing. I wonder if McEwan was talking to himself through the rejection letter Briony, his writer-protagonist, supposedly received from an editor. Still and all, he's one talented writer who has a gift for luminous description.
Like mimi, I told myself to read at least 12 books this year, and so far i've finished only The 13th Tale and Atonement, not included of course is my rereading thrice since January of Strunk and White's Elements of Style and once of Frey's Volumes 1 and 2 of How To Write A Damned Good Novel. Grrrr.
Thanks too for the I-HEART-NY shirts. I love them.

Remember, each of us is a vital thread in another person’s tapestry; our lives are woven together for a reason. One of the best things to hold onto in this world is a friend.
i've read "the innocent man", J.Grisham's non-fiction ever. so touching. pwede sab baya mahitabo sa american justice system na an yakalaboso inosente sa charge sa iya... so "pinoy"

sorry i missed this post... nway, re: J. Grisham's "The Painted House", because you endorsed it, and as his only non-legal thriller fiction... it was also the only reason i braved and endured the summer heat to go out and find a copy. i couldn't find at NBS-quezon ave. fortunately, i did at Booksale (SM- san lazaro). i am about to finish reading J. Picoult's "Mercy"... next in line "The Painted House".
thanks.

k-spy, i felt the exact opposite about the painted house, precisely because it is not a legal thriller. it's not so much about its literary merits but more of feeding my now defunct lawyerly ambitions hehehe
same here... laong pa the feeling is mutual. my curiosity because it ( TPHouse) is not the usual J. Grisham's legal/thriller made me giddy in searching for a copy of it. nway, amo pa ako ga sugod pag basa...

my lust for legal thriller may have waned but my wish to become a lawyer has not. let's get inspiration from the mother of guido alvarez who, at 72, made it to the bar. now, if only STC and SSPSC would offer law classes. but i digress.
have you read any of Steve Martini's books? he's very good and he, like Grisham, also specializes in legal thrillers. but when it comes to legal eagle characters, nobody beats Jennifer Parker in Sidney Sheldon's The Rage of Angels and Michael Barrett in Irving Wallace's The Seven Minutes.
ice, i beg you to read The Seven Minutes. it's sooooo good it'll leave you breathless.
gingot,
the trick to appreciating The Painted House is to read it as though it's your first time with John Grisham.

Thanks for that k-spy - i'll have a look the next time i go out for a book hunt.

Kamps, Ice & Gingot,
That's what exactly happend to me. Painted House bored me so much. But because it was the first I picked from the crocodiles of JG's books that were at hand, I pressed on. From his wide array of legal stories his "A Time to Kill" really did make mark.
Rage of Angels. I acquisce. I was riveted by Jennifer's audacious tactics in defending her clients. Also, my first with SS and I guess the first book that took my breath away having a woman character tested by time and managed to exonerate hereself. Really a good read.
Basaha Ice lami lagi. Kinon-o kamo kadi? An ako ipadahay ay ay wara gayod makalugar. Pagkadi dakan niyo. Kanaman pagdali na kamo pagkadi.
Matay GINGOT ---yalaong pakaw. Hamoki ko na books na inhatag sa church para sa anual rammage sale. kadaghanan kan John Grisham & Sheldon. Pero kon gusto mo hamok ko na isab na books on CD (audio) kay my eyes are bad na, tapus gusto ko isab pamati-on while on the road driving. Let me know.
True. I didn't find any lawyers and courtrooms...
It is really a departure for J. Grisham's who normally writes suspense, legal-thrilleeeer...
A much gentler story, well told, with characters that stay in your mind long after the book is finished. This would be a great summer (or vacation) book. Anyhow, MYSTERY, not J. Grisham's best. He is much better when he writes concerning the legal profession.
Did some book hunt last friday, bought some of Kristin Hannah and Anna Quindlen works... much gentler this time... conteporary family drama and the sort.
