THE SEARCH FOR HALLOWEEN GLAMOUR GIRL…the inside story!

Unread post by kampanaryo_spy »

Since last year, Elaine had been bugging me to whip up a show that would bring back the oomph in the way Tagon-ons celebrate All Souls’ Day. Apparently she had grown tired of the Ms. Gay Tilt which the candidates themselves often described as “dog show.”

In mid-October this year, I texted Elaine if she would go home to Tago and be my Girl Friday in mounting the Search for Halloween Glamour Girl. She said yes. I then told her to borrow from Bobot Bagohin some gowns and soundtrack we could use.

Elaine went home with no gowns and no soundtrack! But by then the die had already been cast!

I had my concept written down to the last detail, but being caught in the eye of an electoral storm, my hands were tied: Solicitation was banned and teens were busy campaigning either for themselves or their SK candidates.

While waiting for the frenzy to blow over, we finetuned the contest ideals and composed a predetermined list involving Tago’s crème de la crème. From this list, talent scouts must take their pick. If they wanted to get talents outside of the list, then they must get our nod!

To free the candidates and their parents from expenses, talent scouts would be mobilized and given the same prizes as the winning Glamour Girls. The Secretariat would provide them with clothes for Halloween Chic and High Fashion Competitions, leaving them with only the Teen Fashion Competition to worry about, which was quite easy since the mandated attire consisted of shorts and sexy top.

More than creating awareness, our posting the show’s poster in some strategic places in Tago was a leap of faith!

Looking for candidates was hard. Even harder was getting their parents to approve the show’s title and venue.

There was also this problem of who was going to choreograph the show because Bobot Bagohin was not around. I contacted some homegrown talents but all of them said they couldn’t translate the song I wanted (From Dreamgirl’s One Night Only) into a production number. Then I met Loblob Verano at Nick’s. In charge of intermissions during Nikki’s campaign sorties, Loblob said he could do it. He suggested some sounds to go with two other segments but then again, I already had the soundtrack down pat!

Every chance I got, I prayed. Elaine had told me that if Nikki Blaine won as SK Chair of Tago, Nick and Bebels would give their full support to the show. Earlier I had broached the idea to them that the Search for Halloween Glamour Girl could be adopted as maiden project of Nikki as SK chair of Tago.

When Nikki won, Nick suggested to mount the show at the gym because he said the cemetery might be too small for a show that now had gained mileage. Besides, he said, the weather forecast was bleak up until November 3.

When October 30---the first night of rehearsal---came around, we only had six candidates. (Originally I wanted six, but the choreographer and my gangmates wanted eight.) Then the next day, a candidate backed out because her Muslim father had disapproved and turned ballistic. Quickly we looked for substitutes and compromised the standard a bit.

Thinking production expenses would be minimal, I solicited “just a small amount” from five tagosds.org bloggers. Three readily responded, one declined, while the other must have been very busy to open her mail. Days later she would PM me, saying she was sorry for not reading my letter and would send an amount through PNB. (This turned out to be a blessing because we still had some payables.) But because donations were still forthcoming, Japan, as usual, used her money first.

Production expenses rose as we had to construct a longer and wider ramp on November 1, a public holiday! We bought electrical supplies and decided to increase the prizes; talent scouts demanded for consolation prizes. And because all these were not part of the show’s financial plan, I wrote another batchmate based in Calfornia and Mayor JP for additional funds. I got a positive and quick response.

We had no choice but to sweat the small stuff and change gear in a speed of light. I wanted a Halloween Avant Garde segment but the scouts said it would take time for them to erase the flamboyant make-up. One thing I didn’t want was delay in production time and so we agreed to go for Halloween Chic instead.

The concept was to provide scouts with1.5 meters of white cloth, let their imagination and creativity fly, and come up with a get up that would give their bets a ghostly but sexy illusion. For obvious reason, I wanted everything in immaculate white with no accessory whatsoever. But then Joy called minutes before the show began, saying he had put floral headdresses on his bets.

We agreed for different location shoots but the candidates and their scouts messed up the schedule. On hindsight it was for the better, otherwise I would have spent a lot of time in producing more videos rather than just two: “The Glam Girls’ Many Faces,” and “The Glam Girls’ Profile.”

Though I had earlier contacted Francis Morse and Marchie Pareja to handle the show, I realized that things needed explaining and it would be difficult for them to do as there was no time for them to rehearse and memorize their lines. So I decided to host the show myself even if I was old for it!

We had problems with sashes, but then Balo Carcallas came into the picture. I wanted nice bouquets (didn’t want to give out trophies!) but flowers were selling at obscene prices because it was All Souls’ Day. Then Tata Dolon-Pimentel texted, saying she wanted to get involved and that if there was something she could do to help. Turned out, she’s an artisan who’s adept at making bouquets and wristlets. And the nicest thing about it was----she paid for them!

On November 1, excitement was palpable and people were just about ready to adjust their clock to fast mode.

Amidst all this madness, the vision remained clear: TO DELIVER TOTAL ENTERTAINMENT!

During the show, the rationale of the Search was flashed on the vidiwall, thus: “The Search for Halloween Glamour Girl is a show with an attitude. It aims to introduce the teens of Tago into a world of sophistication and glamour. It veers away from the usual beauty contest format and instead goes the way of the more exuberant and flamboyant fashion show.”

I also flashed on the vidiwall the meaning of the word “glamour.” I flashed the criteria, explaining why a higher percentage was given to Glamour (40%) than Beauty (30%), or Figure (20%), or Wit (10%). I explained why the candidates didn’t smile but instead projected like fashion models. All these helped the audience understand everything the show stood for!

One innovation that I introduced which the people really liked was the flashing of the question on the vidiwall. It made people read the question themselves instead of having the host read it for them.

The show started quite late because Joy and Agot took a long time to prepare their bets. But the crowd didn’t mind because we showed J Lo’s concert on the vidiwall.

By the time we were ready to roll, the gym was full to the rafters, forcing many others to stay and watch from the outside. Cars circled the plaza like a huge, multicolored belt.

Despite a two-day preparation, the Search for Halloween Glamour Girl was a killer! And people had but one complaint: it was quite brief!

The show, inclusive of intermission and video presentation, ran for a little less than two hours, ending at 11:30. Tabulation of results was so quick that even before a particular segment ended, I was ready to proclaim the winner! Guess this unnerved people, given their experience with similar shows that dragged long into the wee hours of the morning.

Hanggang sa muli!

K-Spy,

Very well…

Case in point that nothing is deemed un-accomplishable, if, with great guidance, people cooperate and work well with one another. :-D (Sorry, K-Spy, can't help it. Diane Setterfield's way of writing ("The Thirteenth Tale") has influenced me...only for a day I suppose! ](*,))

Kamps,

Like a bolt from the blue and amidst constraints of time and resources you managed to come up such a spectacular show. Your collaborators and you, being the honcho of the whole event deserve to be given a guernsey. Well done!

Keep same or any of this sort in the offing. BRAVO! :roll :roll :roll

search me because really, i don't know what to make of this!

mr. clyde paurnia, assistant principal of purisima school, has called the purisimian glamour girl candidates to his office and demanded explanation why they joined the search.

the girls said they acted on their personal capacity and didn't use the name of purisima school. They even added that it was a decent show that didn't require them to wear swimsuits. unconvinced, mr. paurnia told the girls to write a justification letter which was due that tuesday afternoon.

the choreographer texted me and though it was against my will, i ghostwrote the letter for the glam girls, citing among other things, youth empowerment as articulated in purisima school's mission statement.

whew!

while i respect mr. paurnia's action, i just wonder if purisima school's student manual prohibits any student from joining beauty contest outside the campus. Or if it has a student manual to begin with!

a lot of purisimians before joined mutya ng tago and wore swimsuits and yet not a single SPC sister raised a qualm.

TIMES HAVE INDEED CHANGED!

hi bon,

partly correct kaw. ya "pressure" da siguro si clyde kay before that, daan na gaulit an glam girls sa choreographer na paga "threaten" sila nan isa ka maestra (not mrs. orozco, the principal) kay unoy kuno ila pangentra.

fr. ricky, the school rector, knew about the girls' participation and interposed no objection.

haha batchmate mo raba iton si clyde. sige lang kay i will clarify the matter with clyde when i see him.
