MEMORIES

Unread post by pato »

Many of us have some memorable memories with our Grand Parents. To some, it may be good or gloomy story, but the memories that had been written in the book of our lives will never be forgotten. This story of mine is a story that tells about my few of the myriad memorable experienced memories with my Lolo Fidel when he was still alive.

As far as I can remember, my memorable memories with my Lolo Fidel started when my parents had decided to live in Crossing, Victoria. As a very hyper active lad then, the Portillo Rice Mill that owned by my Lolo in Crossing had always been my play ground. It had been my hiding place for the “Hide and Seek” game, while at the same time, enjoyingly wading through the winnowed rice husks, like mountain that had been blown away by its exhaust nuzzle outside the shabby and cluttered building. Every time I heard a chugging of a hauler truck, which it became familiar to me, I knew then that he was already around. I will stride immediately outside looking after him, like a happily dog that wiggles his tail as he is gladly welcoming his master’s arrival. I knew then, that in just a tap of his pant’s pocket, the “Bobot” candy in the nearest store will be mine.

My Lolo Fidel was lavish to everybody. He had been of help to his other siblings and to the other servants of the house who's willing to pursue and finish their studies. He was close to the nuns and priests in our town because he pleasurely gave them a sack of rice as their monthly food consumption in the convent.

Every Christmas, I couldn’t remember that the whole family and his siblings would not be going there present at their house in Tago. I would always prepare a piece of song in exchanged of the two (P2.00) crispy peso bill that had been stacked and had been looming on his leather hickock wallet as he starts to open it. He also loves to shower coins to his grand children as we were rummaging through the every corner of the living room. As I look back, I would imagine, “how happy it had been. It was like an ecstacy that seemed to be no tomorrow.”

As the years passed by, things have changed. The busy rice mill before had been fading like a haunted building so silent. All you can hear was its whisper of the wind which passes through the holes of the broken trite walls that had been standing by for decades. My Lolo had been getting old and sickly, and no one of his children had the interest in milling business. Though it’s lucrative yet, you would be looking drawn and untidy by its hovering dust compared working inside the frigid air conditioned room office. Maybe, it’s the reason why his children don’t like it or they had simply chose the path which they think it would made them happy and comfortable. His only hope was his second son, Douglas, who likes farming but he had been died untimely.

In his later years, my Lolo would have been gone to Manila for a medical check-up, though the results were all normal, only his hearing problem was the problem, but I think, for me then, it was the effect of his yearnings to his children since her partner in life had been gone already. It had also been advisable for him to just let him stay at home instead of going out outside because he easily gets tired and could hardly breath due to his remarkable age. He must have been died already without his nebulizer. But the memorable thing I admired most about my Lolo was that, he was religious ever since despite of all his weaknesses. He would always pray the rosary everyday and he eagerly wakes up in the wee early hour of the morning, on Sundays, to hear the first mass . Though, you’ll get embarrassed if you’ll be chosen as his companion at the church because he loudly speak and yawn as it echoes everywhere or in the midst of silence of the Holy Mass but, the memorable memories had I been experiencing with him will always be kept and treasured deep in my heart as it has always been. I miss you, Lolo Fidel.

pats,

matay ka dakui na tahas inin insangon mo kanako. pero sige, dawaton ko an hagit. :-D but first, a few thoughts on editing. it is not ghostwriting; it is a tool to let the story come out by eliminating "unnecessary" things. again, Strunk and White said "make every word tell."

i compare editing to eating escabeche. this dish looks very good because of a combination of spices and sauce, but to enjoy the fish, you have to push aside the spices and the sauce. that's what editing does---take away the spices and the sauce!

i can very well see that you have the skill of a storyteller. the article is highly nuanced by minute details that tug at the heart. and you have the writerly skill of capturing things unseen like the wind.

it is a fact well known that ninoy aquino started as a very bad writer. all he had was a great eye for stories. when he went to korea, his editor, teodoro locsin sr., told him to go for the stories and he'd take care of the writing. ninoy did just that. but many years of practice and dedication to his craft, he became a good writer, celebrated and multi-awarded!

MY LOLO FIDEL
by Pato

We all have memorable experiences with our grandparents. Good or bad, these memories are written in the book of our lives, never to be forgotten. This story is about my unforgettable memories with Lolo Fidel.

My memorable experience with Lolo Fidel started when my parents decided to live in Crossing, Victoria where the Portillo Rice Mill once stood. Owned by Lolo Fidel, it became my play ground, my hiding place in a game of hide-and-seek. It was also where I climbed a mountain of rice hulls (it could be itchy after a while) outside the old building.

Every time I heard the familiar sound of a hauler truck, I knew Lolo Fidel had arrived. And like a dog wagging its tail to welcome his master, I would run outside, knowing that when Lolo Fidel dipped his hand into his pocket, the “Bobot” candy in the nearest store would be mine.

Lolo Fidel was always lavish. He helped his siblings and servants, even letting them pursue and finish their studies. He was close to the nuns and priests in our town, giving them a sack of rice monthly.

I couldn’t remember a time that Lolo Fidel’s family and his siblings were not around at his house in Tago on Christmas Eve. I myself would prepare a song in exchange for two crisp one-peso bills stacked in his Hickock wallet. He loved throwing coins to every corner of the living room for his grandchildren to catch and find. As I look back, I would say, “How happy it had been.”

As years went by, things changed. The rice mill became like a haunted building, so silent. All you could hear was the whisper of the wind passing through the cracked wall that had been standing there for decades. Lolo Fidel got older and sickly, and no one among his children was interested in rice milling, thinking perhaps that though it was a lucrative business, they’d look dirty. His only hope then was his second son, Douglas, who liked farming. But then Douglas died early.

In his later years, Lolo Fidel would have stayed in Manila along with his wife where he could have a regular medical check-up, especially that he had hearing problems. His children and grandchildren, who were studying there, would have doted on him. But Lolo Fidel got tired easily and was advised to stay home as he suffered from asthma. (He would have died earlier without his nebulizer.) And so he decided to stay in Tago.

One thing I admired most about Lolo Fidel was that he was religious. Despite his weaknesses, he would pray the rosary everyday, even waking up in the wee hours of the morning. On Sundays, he would attend the first mass (I don’t know if he heard.). And if you were chosen to be his companion, you’d feel embarrassed because in the middle of the Holy Mass, he would speak and yawn so loud it echoed and broke the silence.

These memories of mine with Lolo Fidel will always be kept and treasured in my heart. I miss you, Lolo Fidel.
