LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA (GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ)

Unread post by gingot »

Love in the Time of Cholera (El amor en los tiempos del cólera, 1985) is a novel by Gabriel García Márquez about a fifty-year love triangle between Fermina Daza, Florentino Ariza and Doctor Juvenal Urbino set in the late 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century (roughly 1880 to 1930). The novel, a tale of unrequited love, deeply explores the idea that suffering for love is a kind of nobility.

In the film Serendipity this novel is the one that Jonathan (John Cusack) must find in order to retrieve Sara's (Kate Beckinsale) phone number.

In the film High Fidelity, Rob Gordon (also played by John Cusack) makes reference to this book along with The Unbearable Lightness of Being, saying that he's not the smartest guy in the world, but that he's not the dumbest either, having read these books and he thinks he understood them. "They're about girls, right?" he quips.

Steve Martin, in his humorous essay "Writing is Easy," talks about why Love in the Time of Cholera does not make a very good title. It's all tongue-in-cheek of course. The essay can be found in his book Pure Drivel.

In the 21st episode of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother, lead character Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) describes his ideal wife as having Love in the Time of Cholera as her favorite book.

In The Simpsons episode 1F17 Lisa's Rival, Marge is reading a book entitled "Love In The Time Of Scurvy". Also, in the episode titled Bart vs. Lisa vs. the Third Grade, Lisa is on the bus reading "Love in the Time of Coloring Books".

The story makes you familiar with numerous kinds of love, relationship and characters. To allay the pain of not getting Daza and to soothe the waiting heart, Ariza searches for love everywhere in whorehouses, in extramarital affairs with women twice her age, in beds of widows .. everywhere. His affairs start with carnal desires and end in love, and some time vice versa.
Marquez has covered a plethora of human emotions is such a brilliant manner that you will not be able keep the book down.

Hi Gingot,

The movie is out have you seen it?

It carry positive reviews pero wara pa i salida sa sinihan apiki sa bay. So to while away time I've decided to reread the book laktaw laktaw just to refresh my memory. Pero hain na ma ganid sa dayon kon kasugdan na. :-D

Like the first time maka dukihkih gihapon ako. Dumdum kaw nan parrot? Still is one of my favorite scene in the book yadton min kadto balitaw an President of the Republic with his cabinit ministers sa ila to see the parrot. :-D :-D :-D dumdum kaw? "For two desperate hours the parrot refused to say a single syllable ignoring the pleas and threats and public humiliation of dr. urbino". :-D :-D :-D so common place sa gud for people desperately trying to please. Lamii again reason why this book earned him the nobel prize.

Bottom line, this book deals heavy on human emotions and how true of love being a disease (just like cholera).

abb,

i'll just wait for the movie because i don't think i'll read the book. yadin "Cien Anos de Soledad" gani bagan 135th page pa kay ako, and to think that i started reading it last May pa. I'm afraid I have to live with the fact that I won't know what happened to the town of Macondo after 100 years. *sigh*

translated material sa lagi naman, grrrrr! and having said that, maybe i have to learn Spanish enough to understand the words---subtexts and all!--- as Gabby Marquez wrote them.

K-Spy,

Why not? :-k It's funny how he put pride, vanity, selfishness and love (misplaced, misdirected and otherwise :-D ) in print. Subject as mundane as not having a soap in the bathroom can almost ruin 30 years of marital bliss! :-D

It's dense yet commodious. I think you'll like the narrative power of it. :-D
