Laong nila an taga Tago kuno para-away pero hanugay. Mamingawuni naman ganahani mandahap-dahap nan notisya. Naman ini na pabyon inhimo para kita na mga Tagon-on magkasinusihay, magka-binayluay nan mga gilaong, nan notisya, nan kaayuhan.
Because we have this penchant for not paying attention to what is obvious, I don’t know if most Tagon-ons have noticed that for almost three years now, Tago Elementary School has been closed.
Yes, that school popularly known as “Siti†whose landmark was the widely lamented century old acacia tree!
During weekend nights when we were young, we’d stroll at the plaza with our classmates from Falcon Memorial Elementary School. Then from a dark corner, somebody would shout:
FALCON UGOKON!
Then we’d all bark back with either:
BONGTUD BUTOD!
or
SITI BAHON ITI!
Then we’d laugh. Such was the nature of “gang war†then.
“Siti†suffered from dwindling enrolment. There was a directive that students coming from either Soong or Victoria should enroll at “Siti.†But then majority of students from these areas didn’t want to enroll at the school used to be headed by cerebral luminaries like the late Mrs. Caming M. Luna, Mrs. Naomi Lourdes A. Herrera, Mr. Alejandro Bautista, and Ms. Cynthia Orozco-Acevedo.
Enrolment continued to drop, bringing the class size down to 15 students. Then things worsened and classes had to be combined. Because other schools had class size of at least 50 and needed more teachers, the Department of Education decided to padlock Tago Elementary School in 2004.
From neglect, the school becomes an eye sore, which is not good because it’s the first thing that visitors see when entering Tago.
But recently, the Philippine National Police has decided to hold its office temporily at “Siti†while the PNP building awaits completion.
One wonders what lesson the policemen will impart there.
For now, Tago has to be content with:
FALCON UGOKON!
and
BONGTUD BUTOD!
